Communicating consequences of excess nitrogen- short films for social media linking nitrogen and sustainable development goals

A good communication of complex environmental problems is essential to make a change. This communication should not only focus on policy makers, but also on citizens, as they are central for transformation processes. The problem of nitrogen excess is complex. Combining it with the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can make it more accessible. To get people interested in complex issues, emotions are the key. To make them understand issues despite their complexity, references to everyday life are useful. You can find these aspects in the presented short films which deal with the subjects in an exaggerated and partly satirical way.

I really liked this poster and enjoyed watching the short films. I have two basic questions: (1) you mentioned that nine of 17 SDGs can only be achieved if nitrogen is reduced. Which SDGs are these? We identified five SDGs directly and other seven SDGs indirectly related to the reduction of N in the environment, but perhaps because of the peculiarities of my country (Brazil). I would appreciate having more information on your results to compare countries. (2) Is this communication initiative part of a project? Could you please send me a link (or contact) for additional information? Thank you very much!

Dear Gisleine, thanks for your comment and positive feedback!

With the 9 SDGs we refer to SDG 1, 2, 3, 6, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15. According to the UBA (German Environment Agency) these 9 SDGs are directly linked to human N management.
The short films were produced as part of project finaced by UBA. Unfortunately, we cannot refer to an English website but the project holder is a German NGO called Deutsche Umwelthilfe/ Environmental Action Germany. You can contact me directly as project manager of the project if you like to get further information on the project.
